Mad Love - S1 E7 - Baby, You Can Drive My Car

The foursome go on a road trip. Good God this episode has a stupid title.

Spoilers after the jump.

So the gang went on a roadtrip this week, and I'm tempted to make a road to nowhere joke because absolutely it felt like absolutely nothing at all happened this week. It would be redundant though, because nothing ever seems to happen anyway! One character blurting out they "love" their current boy/girlfriend way too soon has been the plot of an episode so many damn times the number by now is closer to infinity than zero. It was absolutely bland and the way the original conundrum presented itself here reminded me more of the way in which Mike Krahulik refers to pizza rolls rather than his wife to be. The resolution averted many of the usual overwrought romcom conventions but was utterly lacking in substance in the process. Ben and Kate continue to be the most boring, inoffensive couple on television.

What saved this episode from a failing grade was the surprise guest appearance of Chris Parnell, stealing the show as a good-natured state trooper. Judy Greer is my favorite part of the show so to see them team up and confound Larry was great fun. It sounds like he'll be back in the future too, so that's something to look forward to at least. There really wasn't a lot else going on here and I don't think there are enough laughs overall for this show to be really enjoyable. This is Mad Love, not Mad Men, and the pacing needs to be much better. Also, come up with some original ideas. The Parnell subplot is a good place to start.

"Mad Love" airs Mondays on CBS at 8:30 pm EST.
